Unlike EU citizens, Americans need a Residency Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno). The process is famous for being slow, confusing, and involving a lot of "yellow kits" from the Post Office.
What to do now:
- The "Kit Giallo": Go to any Poste Italiane with a "Sportello Amico" and ask for the kit. Fill it out (carefully!) and send it back.
- The Fingerprinting Appointment: You will receive a date for your appointment at the Questura (Police Station). Do not miss this.
- The Wait: In 2026, the wait time in Milan can be anywhere from 6 to 10 months. Your Post Office receipt (assicurata) acts as your legal document in the meantime.
When you go to the Questura, bring paper copies of everything—even if you think you don't need it. And bring a power bank; you’ll likely be waiting for several hours, and there are no charging ports in sight.
